1. Launch vehicles and rockets are in roman, initial caps, and carry Roman numerals:

2. Spacecraft are in roman, initial caps, and carry Arabic numerals:

Apollo 10
Explorer 2
Gemini 8

Mariner 4
Mercury 3
Landsat 1
Surveyor 6
Voyager 1
Pioneer 12
3. Space shuttles, lunar modules, command modules, etc., that have specific names appear in italic, with initial caps:
            space shuttle Discovery
            lunar module Eagle
but     NASA's Mars exploration rovers Spirit and Opportunity
