For compounds, see Webster's. If not listed, hyphenate as a compound modifier preceding a noun:
            near-realized hopes
            near-20/20 vision

Do not hyphenate near when it alone precedes a noun or a compound noun:
            a near disaster
            near humans
            near polar orbit
            near midair collision
