majority, minority

May take either a singular or plural verb depending on whether the word is referring to a group as a unit or to its members as individuals:
            A majority has voted against the bill.
            The majority of the students are going.

Avoid majority if most, greater part, or many can be substituted.

Majority is most often used for elections and other situations involving numbers.

Avoid minority if few or some can be used.
