Hispanic, Latino, Chicano

Hispanic and Latino (Latina is the feminine) are used interchangeably for people of Latin American descent living in the U.S.  When appropriate, use a more specific term, such as Mexican American, Cuban American, Puerto Rican.

Chicano (Chicana) is used for a U.S. citizen or inhabitant of Mexican descent, a Mexican American, but is rarely used today.

These terms have different meanings and varying degrees of acceptance among those of Spanish heritage; use only for individuals who prefer them.

Caution should be exercised to ensure that the usage fits the context.
